Suggested Shopping List

Here’s a shopping list for DIY food security, based on a variety of sources.

  1. Canned and dried meat.

  2. Distilled water.

  3. Canned foods with high liquid content (canned pineapples, vegetable juice)

  4. Dehydrated powered milk.

  5. Whey powder

  6. Eggs and Powdered eggs.

  7. Hard cheezes encased in wax or plastic. Parmesean, swiss, sharp cheddar, or gouda.

  8. Food bars (Clif or Luna). Or better, Millennium Energy Bars–a cross between an energy bar and a ration bar. Has 5 year shelf life.

  9. Pemmican

  10. Canned and dehydrated meats, poultry, seafood. Tuna.

  11. Jerkey.

  12. Drink Mixes: coffee, tea, tang, gatorade, Koolaid.

  13. Bouillon cubes.

  14. Small bottles of virgin cooking oil. Olive oil lasts 2 years.

  15. Coconut oil - lasts up to 2 years.

  16. Canned butter, such as Red Feather brand butter.

  17. Whole wheat flower, bread and pancake mixes. Bisquick, Krusteaz. Bob’s Red Mill Whole Wheat Flour.

  18. Cereals Shredded Wheat, corn or rice. Shredded wheat recommended.

  19. Potato flakes and potato flour. Potato flour is the entire potato (skin and all) dehydrated. Sweet potato flour is possible.

  20. Corn as a grain (cornmeal, corn starch, grits, popcorn)

  21. Canned corn.

  22. Oats and Oatmeal.

  23. Bread crumbs and stuffings.

  24. Shelf stable, ready to eat meals, that you can perhaps add meat to. Macaroni, alfredo, hamburger helper, etc.

  25. Crackers and cookies.

  26. Au Gratin potatoes.

  27. Rice. All types, but brown does not store as well.

  28. Pastas: egg noodles, gnocchi (made with potatoes), dried tortellini (filled with hard cheese), orzo (rice shaped pasta), couscous (wheat-based pasta) and the other variety of shaped Italian pasta such as lasagna, linguine, rotelle, rotini, rigatoni, orecchiette, penne, mastoccilli etc. Also Asian noodles.

  29. Raisins. Also dried prunes.

  30. Dried fruits (but not fruit roll-ups)

  31. Jams and Jellies.

  32. Canned fruits. Peaches, fruit cocktail, etc.

  33. Canned pumpkin puree will also provide a heavy dose of Vitamin A and you can make a simple soup by adding bouillon cubes and spices, such as garlic.

  34. Canned vegetables. Carrots, peas, corn, potatoes, green beans, sweet potatoes, yams, asparagus, artichoke hearts.

  35. Beans of all kinds (dried and canned). Dried peas and lentils too.

  36. Nuts, seeds, and nut-butters. Don’t last long, so rotate stock.

  37. Honey.

  38. Salt. Iodized and other salts: canning salt, pickling salt, pink himalayan salt, epsom salt.

  39. Sugars and Molasses. Cane sugar, brown sugar, powdered sugar. See also Sugar isn’t as bad as you may think.

  40. Spices and herbs. dill, red pepper, cumin, rosemary, oregano, dried mustard, chilli, and ginger. Also pinto bean seasoning.

  41. Condiments: pickle relish, mustard, and mayo (not mayo made from GMO soybeans). Tobasco sauce, soy sauce, worchestshire sauce.

  42. Chocolates that do not contain hydrogenated oils. Chocolate syrups and cocoa powders.

  43. Vitamins.

  44. Apple cider vinegar.

  45. Vodka to drink or barter.

  46. Bourbon vanilla extract.

  47. Leavening Agents: Baking soda and baking powder, dry yeast.

  48. Can opener.

  49. Trail mix.

  50. Tomato soup.

  51. Bottled water (large containers)

  52. Canned fish. Salmon, jack mackerel, sardines, tuna, kippered herring.

  53. Pickles and olives.

  54. Wet wipes (also for bug-out, go bag, etc.)
