Survival Kits #
Survival Kits provide supplies to consume while you are away from home during an emergency. There are several types of survival kits:
- Everyday Carry Items
- 24-Hour Go Bag
- 48-Hour Get Home Bag
- 72-Hour Bug Out Bag
- Wilderness Survival Backpack
- Emergency Sleeping Bags
Everyday carry (EDC) refers to a small collection of tools and supplies carried for preparedness reasons. Unlike survival kits, EDC items are small enough to be carried all the time.
A Go Bag contains 24-hours worth of food, water, and clothing, should you need to quickly evacuate to a shelter. A Go bag keeps you comfortable until you can return home. Keep yours near the front door of your home, to grab on short notice.
A Get Home Bag helps you return home if you are away when an emergency begins. A Get Home bag is similar to a Go bag, but contains supplies to last 48 hours. A Go bag also has items you may need to return home, such as compasses and maps. Keep your Get Home bag in the trunk of your car or at your workplace.
A Bug-Out Bag keeps you supplied until you can reach a bug-out location. At minimum, it should contain food, water, and clothing for 72-hours. This bag will contain more extensive preparedness items, such as fire starters, first-aid supplies, cash, a hygiene kit, multitools, and so on. It will weigh more, so you must choose wisely what to put in it, based on the journey you may make. A bug-out location isn't necessarily a survival cabin somewhere. For many, it's the home of a family member, or a place less affected by disaster.
A Wilderness Survival Backpack is a kit for persons who will live off the land, instead of traveling to a bug-out location.
Emergency sleeping bags are small and lightweight enough to include in your Go bag or Get home bag, and to keep in a vehicle. Emergency sleeping bags are not substitutes for camping-quality bags, such as you might include in a bug-out bag. Should an emergency last a day or two, you'll be glad to have one.
Survival kits are essential if you cannot shelter-in-place during an emergency.
